Transitional Living Programs

Bishop House for Men

Bishop House, administered by New Opportunities Inc. in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Corrections (DOC), is a 48 bed halfway house that serves Greater Waterbury. The all-male residents there participate in a work-release program.

Potential residents of the program are referred by the DOC Waterbury Community Services. These referrals must meet the eligibility criteria for community release as established by the DOC. The average length of stay at Bishop House is within six to eight months of discharge from sentence. The residents are then released to Parole or Transitional Supervision Eligibility.

This DOC program emphasizes work release with a substance abuse component. All participants must be able to work and pay weekly room and board. As warranted, contributions are also made to the State’s Victim’s Compensation Fund. In-house substance abuse services, including substance abuse monitoring, are supplemented by outside self-help and 12-step meetings.

Admission is only by DOC referral. For more information call (203) 236-9990 or email Info [at] NewOpportunitiesInc [dot] org.

Meriden Facility for Women

A Meriden-based facility for women about to leave incarceration, similar to Bishop House for men, is managed by New Opportunities Inc., under the auspices of the DOC. The location accommodates a 10-bed halfway facility for female prisoners during the months immediately prior to discharge from sentence.

It is a work release program and participants are expected to work and pay for room and board as well as make restitution contributions where appropriate. Substance abuse services are also available. At the end of their stay, residents are released to Parole or Transitional Supervision Eligibility.

Admission is by DOC referral only. For more information call (203) 634-1734 or email Info [at] NewOpportunitiesInc [dot] org.
