Supportive Housing
Freedom Walk
New Opportunities administers Freedom Walk, a 25-unit Supportive Housing project in Waterbury, which gives rental and other assistance to 19 families and six individuals coping with disabilities and a lack of resources. The units are spread out among 14 different sites within the city.
This project is funded by certain HUD (Housing and Urban Development) sections; the guidelines of these also make a variety of supportive services available to residents which can include meals, transportation, personal assistance and other benefits, in addition to housing. Nationally, residents of Supportive Housing for the disabled have average annual incomes of less than $6500 so they would clearly have difficulty finding affordable housing in the private market.
Freedom Walk, a Supportive Housing model, also includes partnerships with the Salvation Army, Mutual Housing Willow Development, Waterbury Hospital Health Access Program and the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board which provides job training for the project participants.
